After training in Germany Walter Von Nessen set up Nessen Studio's in New York in 1927 to design and fabricate architectural lighting. He quickly gained a following of well-known modern architects, who commissioned him to design lighting and other household objects for there clients. Von Nessen was the only major designer to concentrate on innovative contemporary lighting. His focus was on creating adjustable indirect lighting using non-traditional materials. For these reasons he was recognized as the first industrial designer of his time. Greta Von Nessen, wife of Walter Von Nessen, revived Nessen Studio's after his death and developed designs of her own. Most notable is the Anywhere lamp which was designed in 1951. Nessen Studio's is now known as Nessen Lamp's Inc. and is still manufacturing many of there designs.

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings studied architecture at London University. In 1936 he opened his own shop on New York's Madison avenue and gained recognition as one of the most important American interior/furniture designers of the late 1930's and 40's. Gibbings work was widely emulated during that time, for it was unlike the mixture of Queen Anne, Georgian and Spanish styles that were popular. From 1943-56 he designed for Widdicomb Furniture of Grand Rapids, MI. He was most influenced by Ancient Grecian design and eventually moved to Athens and became a designer for Aristotle Onassis.
